The Doughboys have arrived! Over The Top: WWI brings American troops to the front in its first update

The 100 vs. 100 shooter Over The Top: WWI is bringing players its first major update, complete with new vehicles, maps, and troops. Plus, the game is free to play on Steam this weekend.

Zurich, Switzerland, August 20th, 2026 – With the arrival of U.S. troops, a fourth nation is joining World War I tonight. As a thank-you to its player base, developer Flying Squirrel Entertainment is bringing a massive content update for free to Over The Top WWI. Included in the free update is the option to play the game in a classic first-person perspective, a much-requested feature by fans. The update also introduces a new, fully defined American faction. The faction introduces a wide variety of new weapons, vehicles, and uniforms per class – historically inspired by US Army designs.

Starting with the release of the new update, from 10 am P.T. tonight until 10 am on Monday, the game will be featured on Steam as part of a Free-Play Weekend and can be tried out completely free of charge. During and after the weekend, until August 27, the game will be 40% off. So players can take as many trips into the trenches as they wish, at the cost of €11.48/$11.48/9.59 GBP.

In addition, the game is introducing the paid DLC Over The Top: WWI – Harlem Hellfighters, which provides players with a wide selection of cosmetic items. The focus is on the Harlem Hellfighters, a notorious American infantry unit that was so successful during World War I that it was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French Army. The cosmetic DLC includes dedicated Harlem Hellfighters outfits for eight classes, as well as four headgear options for each class. The DLC is available on Steam for €3.99/$3.99 /3.33 GBP.

  • Total Annihilation: The realistic battlefield takes on different forms throughout the game thanks to player-driven destruction. Players will dig trenches, and explosions will tear deep craters into the landscape. The battlefield evolves with the dynamic weather, wind, season, and time-of-day system.
  • Various branches of the military: Players can take on 8 entirely different roles in the army, such as Officer, Sniper, or support classes like Engineer.
  • Vast selection of weaponry and vehicles: There are over 50 one-of-a-kind weapons, ten different kinds of armored vehicles and tanks, airplanes, machine guns, mortars, cannons, and more.
  • Map editor: In addition to 14 handcrafted battlefields, the system allows players to create custom maps and upload them to Steam Workshop.
  • Server Tools: Players can host and administrate their own servers, complete with custom maps, rules, and settings.
