MANIC MINER & GAMESCOM 2026

The legendary platformer MANIC MINER® returns this Autumn on all major PC and console platforms, featuring pixel-perfect gameplay and stunning HD visuals. This release is fully authorized by original creator Matthew Smith.

Munich, August 25, 2026 – BBG Entertainment, the Munich-based publisher behind the acclaimed remakes of BOULDER DASH®, ASTROSMASH®, and SHARK! SHARK!®, is bringing one of gaming's most influential platformers back to life: MANIC MINER® – the cult classic that defined a whole generation of home computer gaming – will be released this autumn for PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Steam, Windows, and Mac.

All 20 original levels have been lovingly redesigned with a modern new look, featuring parallax scrolling and dynamic effects.

Authorized by MANIC MINER® creator Matthew Smith, the reboot combines the charm of the 1983 original with modern graphics, revamped controls, a newly recorded soundtrack, and an extensive behind-the-scenes archive. Unlike many of the original game’s previous releases, this authorized edition ensures that Matthew Smith, who has rarely seen significant revenue from his creation despite its huge success, will properly participate in the proceeds from every copy sold.

MANIC MINER® is considered a milestone of the early home computer era. Developed by Matthew Smith, the title captivated players upon its 1983 launch with precise gameplay, a high level of difficulty, and its unique level design.

The development team wanted to preserve the DNA while introducing the classic to a new generation of gamers: First, the original code was reconstructed with pixel-perfect accuracy. This became the foundation for carefully modernizing the levels that drove a whole generation of computer game players to the verge of despair.

All 20 original levels are fully included in two distinct styles:

  • Classic Mode: The authentic pixel art experience with the original sound backdrop. For those seeking the ultimate nostalgic trip, an optional CRT TV mode can also be selected.
  • Modern Mode: A stunning reinterpretation featuring parallax scrolling, dynamic lighting, and lovingly detailed backgrounds.
Experience every level in either classic pixel-art style or stunning HD re-imagining — and switch on the optional CRT TV frame for that genuine 1980s home-computer feel.

Modern Controls, Familiar Challenge:

The controls have been completely overhauled for modern platforms, delivering precise, fluid gameplay that respects the original’s notoriously high difficulty while making it significantly more accessible to new players. But beware, this game won’t go easy on you!

Classic Soundtrack Reborn:

The iconic classical compositions by Johann Strauss and Edvard Grieg have been re-arranged in a contemporary style, giving the game a fresh, high-quality sound that honors its heritage.

The Definitive MANIC MINER® Archive:

Fans and history buffs can explore an extensive interactive history tracing the game’s development from its early 1980s concepts, through its rise to cult status, to today’s re-release.

Featuring concept art, historical graphics, and fascinating insights behind the scenes, this is the most comprehensive look at MANIC MINER® ever made available.

And yes…for those who remember the original's most infamous resident: Eugene the toilet monster is back and ready to frustrate a new generation of players.

Hans Ippisch, producer of the MANIC MINER® reboot, explains:

“Manic Miner was a smash hit in 1983 … one that influenced generations of players and developers. For my team and me, bringing back this cult classic is a huge honor. And personally, I'm very happy we can ensure that Matthew Smith will properly share in the success of this reboot.”
